It brings much more to the table than the Pixma MP280, which sells for $40 less, adding a preview screen and the ability to print from multiple media sources. The Canon Pixma MG5120 All-in-One Photo Printer is a well-rounded MFP selling at a very reasonable price. Few printers do an adequate job of printing thin white lines in our tests, but with the MG5120, the lines were nearly invisible. Ink density was uneven in solid areas, and they showed dithering, a breakup into dot patterns, when one looked closely. Graphics were okay for business use, but you probably wouldn't want to use them for PowerPoint handouts. The Canon Pixma MG5520 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-in-One Printer is very similar in form to the Canon Pixma MG7120 Wireless Photo All-in-One Printer (399.99 at Amazon Canada) that Canon introduced. Text was adequate for school or general business use, but not for formal reports or resumes. A monochrome photo showed a trace of a tint one image showed some aliasing-the tendency for straight lines to appear less than razor-edged. There were a number of minor photo flaws, but nothing too serious. Colors were rich, though not oversaturated. The photos were as good as, or a touch better than, what you'd expect from drugstore prints. The MG5120's photo printing quality was slightly above par for an inkjet MFP, while both text and graphics were slightly below par. The MG5120 took an average time of 1:39 to output a 4-by-6 photo, a decentg speed for its price. The Editors' Choice Epson Stylus NX625 ($149.99 direct, 4 stars) took only 3:45, but the Canon Pixma MP280 ($69.99 direct, 3 stars) took 8:04, and the Epson Stylus NX420 ($99 direct, 2.5 stars) required 8:41 to finish. The MG5120 printed out the latest version of our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software) in 6 minutes 26 seconds, a reasonable time for a $110 printer. It also has an integrated fax feature and it can duplex scan too. The G7020 is a well-built supertank printer, so its ink tanks can yield more pages before they need to be refilled, and its cost-per-print is much lower.

As the MG5120 is limited to USB connectivity, we tested it connected to a PC running Windows Vista. The Canon PIXMA G7020 is a better overall inkjet printer than the Canon PIXMA TS9120. It has a 150-sheet paper tray, enough for light-duty home-office work, and a built-in automatic duplexer. The glossy black MG5120 measures 6.3 by 17.9 by 14.5 inches and weighs 17 pounds.
